Committing to the Commitment

At the age of 67, Thomas Edison watched as fire destroyed much of his work and equipment. Time to retire? Time to hang up the lab coat? No way.“All our mistakes are burned up,” the inventor said. “Now we can start anew.”

There is a time to retire, but Edison knew his time hadn’t come. The fire that consumed his work didn’t destroy the fire that burned within him to continue his work. Edison’s commitment remained.

People tend to associate commitment with emotions. If they feel the right way, then they can follow through on their commitments. But true commitment doesn’t work that way. Commitment is not an emotion; it’s a character quality that enables us to reach our goals.

Emotions go up and down all the time, but commitment must remain rock solid. A solid team—whether it’s in business, sports, marriage or a volunteer organization—must have team players who are solidly committed to the team.

Four things every team player needs to know about being committed:
1. Commitment is usually discovered in the midst of adversity.
2. Commitment does not depend on gifts and abilities.
3. Commitment results from choices, not conditions.
4. Commitment lasts when it is based on values.

I had thought about doing something a little different today in my first blog post in a while, but I came across this information this morning in my reading and I thought I would share it. It’s timely with what is going on in America at the moment. These are not my thoughts or information. I just wanted to share the “trivial knowledge” I’ve gain a reputation for.

Anarchism

Amid the twentieth century’s great clashes between communism, fascism, and democracy, one small, militant political movement opted for a different course: none of the above.

Anarchism- the opposition to all forms of government- was founded by European political theorists including Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (1809-1865) and Mikhail Bakunin (1814-1876). The movement enjoyed its greatest popularity in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in both Europe and the United States.

To its adherents, anarchism promised an end to government oppression as well to the depredations of capitalism. Anarchists believed that private property should be abolished and control of factories turned over to workers. Although anarchism had many similarities with communism, philosophers such as Proudhon did not envision any role for the state whatsoever.

In practice, anarchist launched a global wave of violence, with a special emphasis on assassinations of authority figures that they hoped would eventually bring down governments across the world. In Russia, Czar Alexander II (181-1881) was killed by an anarchist bomb. The king of Italy, Umberto I (1844-1900), was shot dead. Lean Czolgosz (1873-1901), the assassin of President William McKinley (1843-1901), was an anarchist. Anarchists were also blamed for an attack on Wall Street that killed thirty-eight bystanders in1920, although the crime was never solved.

Anarchists, by their very nature, lacked a cohesive national leadership structure, although the most well know American anarchist was Emma Goldman (1869-1940). But their secretiveness only made them appear more fearsome; fear of anarchism helped trigger the Red Scare after World War I, in which Goldman and many suspected anarchists and communists were deported from the United States.

Anarchism still has followers, although its violence ended in the United States after the 1920s.

What a challenge it is to maintain right thinking when faced with so many obstacles. The past few weeks I have been really stretched in so many ways - time with my family, time at work and even time with God. I have never been in a place with my life that I love my job (I hate calling it that because I love it so much.) I have been blessed with an awesome wife and son, and I constantly see God working and moving in so many ways (in my life, in my family and in my church.)

But I need to tell you…I get extremely anxious, stressed and overwhelmed when I get stretched like I have been. When these times happen I get moody. I have to battle being moody and I hate that. So what I have to do is refocus my thoughts. Today my wonderful bride Courtney and my boss/friend Jimmy Britt helped me. Spending time with these people help and along with scripture that I put to memory. The verse that I have been recalling a lot lately has been Philippians 4:6,7- “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

It is awesome when the peace of God comes in and calms the storm!

Being Free

While reading, I came across two statements about freedom that resound ed very loudly to me:

1 - The better where you stand with the Lord, the more free you can be.
2 - The more free you are before the Lord, the more confident you will become.

The better you stand with the Lord, the more free you can be! I hate so badly what people have done with Christianity. Some leaders have made rules so burdensome and strict that it is absolutely impossible to be a Christ - follower. This is exactly what the religious leaders did in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, Christ came to offer us freedom through salvation and grace. Grace is not burdensome. It free s us from sin and despair. When my relationship is right with God, I will not care about anyone else’s opinion of me, but only where I stand with God. I have to admit, the times I get insecure about who I am or what I’m doing is when I have not spent any time reading and praying and am just not focused on the will of God for my life.

The more free you are before the Lord, the more confident you will become. When I know where I stand with God, there is real security. When I remember God sent his son to die for me, I know I am valuable to Him. When I understand there are things that are important to God, such as the details of my life, the way I live my life, the closeness I have with Him, the more confidence I have. God set His heart of favor on those whose hearts are following Him. He honors those who honor His word. He makes them exceedingly happy.

Let me encourage you. Experience God’s freedom. Live a more free life. Seek Him by reading His Word and spending time in meditation on His Word and in also in prayer.

“…where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17

Decision

Do you struggle with making the right decision? Do you need help to decide whether to take that job, to move or to stay? We all have decisions, big and small that we need some guidance with. And the good news is that God wants to give it to you. It pleased God when Solomon asked for wisdom (1 Kings 3:7-14), it pleases God when we ask Him for wisdom and it is in His nature to give. He is a giving God.

The Bible says in James 1:5, "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." (NIV)

This verse says three things about how God gives wisdom. He does so:

Continually. "Ask God who gives ..." In Greek this is in the continuous tense. He keeps on giving. He doesn't run out of energy. He never wears out.

Generously. God's resources are unlimited. He has enough resources for everyone. He's got plenty of wisdom to go around.

Cheerfully. James says God gives "without finding fault." God loves to give. It's in his nature to give! Don't get embarrassed to ask. He wants to give you wisdom!

Where do you need help and wisdom? God has wisdom to offer. But remember what James says. If you want wisdom from God, you've got to ask!

Signals of Stress

2010 "Mind Dump" and 2011 "Ramp Up"

Today is the last day of being 38 years old and I really don’t know what to think about it. There is absolutely nothing I can do about it. I know I’m getting close to 40 and I don’t know why I dread it so much. In my mind it is "middle-aged" and I also consider myself younger. After my yearly physical on Monday and my birthday tomorrow, it reminds me I’m getting older. I’m very much retrospective this week. This year did not start that great for me with my sister-n-law being diagnosed with cancer, having horrible back pain and eventually surgery and a family friend's father slowly passing away. But the year had a great turn-around and finished on a positive note. My wife and I bought a house that we love in a neighbor we love. My wife’s sister got married to an awesome guy, my sister-n-law is in remission, Rocky River Church (where I serve on staff) started building their first-ever building and there are some very positive changes taking place. I really love my life and what I do.

I have one more year left in my 30’s, but my 30’s have been great to me. I got married to my awesome bride, we bought 2 houses and my son was born 3 ½ years ago. I’ve changed careers 3 times: left the ministry to work for Kinko’s, Staples and OfficeMax; left that career to work in real estate; left real estate to do what I was called to do and started out doing ministry, working with people - not paper or property.

Over the last month I’ve been cleaning out and going through boxes that I have had for years. I am a borderline hoarder and don’t throw anything away, especially if it was a handwritten letter/card or had some meaning to me (just ask my wife). As I was cleaning things out I was reminded of some people who have spoken into my life over the years. Travis Baxter, whom I have known since the 7th grade and has been the best friend anyone could have asked for. He was very important for me becoming serious about my faith, my best man in my wedding and someone I talk to on a weekly basis. I love this guy and his family. Jay and Melanie Stewart, my pastors in the youth group and spoke so much into my life. We have not kept up much in the past couple of years but their impact in my life will never fade. Bruce Mulford- my great friend from college. I was his best man in his wedding. I miss Bruce because we have not talked in the past couple of years but he is the Godliest man and husband I know. I have always admired the love he has for God and for people. Jack and Sara Snavley- Sara is the closest thing I have to a sister, although I joke that she is old enough to be my mom. She was my right arm during the time I served in Ohio as a youth minister. She and Jack took me as one of their family when I didn't know anyone in Ohio. We speak several times a month and I visit her and Jack once a year. Although there are many people who have impacted my life, these people I remember the most. But none of these people have impacted my life as much as my wife has. I am so thankful I have Courtney to finish my life with.

Wow- I feel good now. I have dumped out the things I have been dwelling on for a while. Now I’m excited about ramping up for 2011. I am ready to finish my 30’s strong. Here are some things I want to accomplish/ ramp up/ goals for the last year of my 30’s and head into my 40’s with full steam. Here it is in list form:

1. Loose 40 pounds to be around my ideal weight. I want to fit into the skinning jeans all the hip, young people are wearing (not really, just kidding - really it's those acid washed jean I use to wear!)

2. I want to blog at least 52 times next year. That’s at least once a week but does not necessarily mean once a week, it may be twice a week.

3. I want to read one book a month. I already read a lot of blogs and magazines. I just want to increase my book reading.

4. I want to start my Master Degree in Leadership Management. This will depend on my financial situation.

5. I want to be in coaching a network for pastors who do what I do. This will depend on my financial situation.

Part of my reason for posting my goals is to make them real and accountable. I also added numbers to make them measurable.

I am going to make next year the best possible year I can make it. I hope you will do the same as well.

I like blogging and recently I've not shared much from my personal life, but the things I do blog about are some of the things I read and chew on for a few days. I like sharing these thoughts through my blog because it allows me to share with others. Sometimes, I like sharing things that make me laugh. God is listening

When a man or woman of God fails, nothing of God fails. When a man or woman of God changes, nothing of God changes. When someone dies, nothing of God dies. When our lives are altered by the unexpected, nothing of God is altered or unexpected.

In the book of Isaiah (in the Old Testament of the Bible) chapter 65 verse 24, it states: “Before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking I will hear.” Before you even utter a word, God promises, “I’m involved in answering. In fact while you’re speaking, I’m involved in bringing to pass the very thing I have planned from the get go (My paraphrase).”

God is never at a loss to know what He’s going to do in our situations. He knows perfectly well what is best for us. Our problems is, we don’t know. And we say to Him, “Lord, if you tell just tell me, then I’ll be in great shape. Just reveal it to me. Explain Your plan to me, and I’ll count. Just reveal it to me. Explain Your plan to me, and I’ll count on You.” But that’s not faith. Faith is counting on Him when we do not know what tomorrow holds.

Leadership is scarce because few people are willing to go through the discomfort required to lead. This scarcity makes leadership valuable. If everyone tries to lead all the time, not much happens. It’s discomfort that creates the leverage that makes leadership worthwhile.

Creating a Team Environment

Environment means the right soil to grow in, the right air to breathe in and the right climate to live in.

Questions to consider in leading a team:

1. Do I understand what it takes to be a TEAM.

M- mindfulness that we need each other.

Can papyrus grow where there is no marsh? Can reeds flourish where there is no water? - Job 8:11
Environment is everything when it comes to making things grow. It doesn’t matter if it is tall corn stalks in the middle of Nebraska, or reeds in the middle of Egypt, or people in the midst of everyday life. Environment is what makes the conditions for growth possible.When growth is stunted or inhibited, or when a growing thing becomes sick, it is because something is askew in its surroundings, and those surroundings need to be changed in order for full health and development to be restored.
Much is written and taught in contemporary society about the need for balance in our lives. We know that when we are unbalanced, we are distorted and lack the right environment in which to thrive. And so, we try to create a more positive environment by changing our reactions, by reducing our stress, by taking time for ourselves, by exercising.
What about the environment that surrounds our soul? Is there any imbalance, disturbance, or distortion there? Is there ample time and space for the soul to grow, or is it cramped and scrunched between all the busy-ness of life? Is there enough silence so that it can be still and commune with its Creator? Is it choking on a diet of shame and guilt, or it is swimming freely in an ocean of unconditional love?
Think for a moment about your soul—can it grow where there is no marsh? Can it flourish where there is no water? - O God, give me the wisdom to see what needs to be changed in my life so that my soul is able to breathe.

Lies I struggle with

1. Sometimes I believe the lie that I can’t afford to take a break or rest.
2. Sometimes I believe the lie that I’ll spend quality time with my wife at the end of the day.
3. Sometimes I believe the lie that the more I do the more valuable I am.
4. Sometimes I believe the lie that the little problem I have isn’t jeopardizing my leadership.
5. Sometimes I believe the lie that I need to jump at every good opportunity.

These lies can really cloud my thinking on things and impair my judgment. It takes discipline in my thoughts to over come this kind of thinking. I can’t remember whom I first heard said this but it has stuck with me, “Discipline thought equals discipline action.”

The ways I try to stay discipline:
- Schedule my week in advance.
- Prioritize time with my wife on son.
- Surround myself with friends who will push back when needed.
- Stay disciplined about my faith, my exercise and personal time.
- Learn to say no.
- Decide in advance what I hope to accomplish.

Forgiveness means more then just rolling over and playing dead. There are a few things forgiveness is not, and these may help balance the picture. Forgiveness does not mean pardon. Forgiveness is personal; it refers to the impact an offense has on you and your need to release the resentment you feel. Pardon is legal rather personal, concerned only with the legal status of the offense, not the relationship between the offender and the victim. And pardon, unlike forgiveness, means letting someone off the moral hook and releasing them from the punishment they deserve…

A second thing that forgiveness does not mean is excuse… C. S. Lewis wrote, “ there is all the difference in the world between forgiving and excusing. Forgiveness says: “Yes, you have done this thing, but I accept your apology. I will never hold it against you, and everything between us will be exactly as it was before.’ But excusing says: ‘ I see that you couldn’t help it, or didn’t mean it, you weren’t really to blame.’ If one was not really to blame, then there is nothing to forgive. In that sense, forgiveness and excusing are almost opposites.”

If this is true, we need not to be afraid that in practicing forgiveness we are somehow tolerating wrong or condoning evil. Forgiveness does not mean, “ceasing to blame,” but rather, “letting go of resentment.”

And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others - the armies of heaven - praising God and saying, “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased” (From the New Testament book, Luke, chapter 2, verses 8 through 14.)

This is my favorite time of year. I love the time from Thanksgiving ‘til New Years Day. There are 3 big holidays in a month and half; also there is my birthday (Dec. 31 - don’t forget!) The biggest of them all, especially for me, is Christmas Day. During each stage of my life this day has had different meanings. Being married and having an awesome wife and a wonderful son makes this a special day for me. I love getting Courtney and MD gifts. I love filling up their stockings with knick-knacky stuff. I also enjoy the gifts they get me.

One thing that happens to me during this time is things get really busy and everything becomes a whirlwind. Christ came as a child to bring us great joy, not just happiness, but joy. Happiness is based on happenings, from one moment to another. Depending on the moment we are in depends on whether or not we are happy. Joy is from within; it is eternal and a state of mind. Joy is not based on circumstances or events, it’s not a next-door neighbor named Joy or something you jump for. Joy is what you have regardless of what you are going through. Joy is what helps sustain you in the dark moments of life.

The good news of the angels to the shepherds, “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people…” This “joy” is for everyone, not just for a few people but for every single person on this planet. God cares deeply for you; He cares about how you feel and what you are going through. He sees your struggles, your circumstances, your busy-ness, and your depression. He knows about the economy, your oddball family members and the parties/gathering during this time of year. He wants you to experience joy, not just between now and News Years Day but all year - every single day of your life."

This past October 1st marked my 1-year anniversary on staff at Rocky River Church. I love what I do and am challenged by what I do. It’s been 9 years since I served on a church staff and things are so different now. When I started in 1995 as a youth pastor in Ohio, most people didn’t have the Internet, cell phones, DVD players or laptops and I was fresh out of college. So, of course, I knew everything there was to know about church ministry. Yah, right.

So, during my 4 years in Ohio, I could have learned so much. I look at the people who surrounded me back then: John Musgrave (the pastor I served under), Sara Snavley (my assistant and one of my best friends) and Randy Davis (youth pastor/friend.) These Godly people spoke to my life. However, my problem was all the book knowledge I had with very little or no life experience. I knew very little then and wish at times I could go back with the knowledge I have now. (Sounds like a country song, huh?) I would be more teachable. I would remember people (even myself) are sinners and I would rely more on God.

After leaving Ohio, I didn’t want to be a youth pastor or a full-time church staff person again. I just thought I’d retire as a real estate agent. Then, some changes starting taking place in my life – I became a dad, we changed churches, real estate started to slow down for me and the company I was broker/manager for closed overnight (huge shock.) By this time Jimmy had already asked me to come on staff to work with RRC’s small groups. So, I accepted and now I work with some great people who are more than my co-workers.

Teresa (RRC’s administrative assistant) is awesome. She makes me laugh and she challenges me with her honesty. Travis (RRC’s student/families pastor) is like the younger brother I already have, just 10 years younger. He has incredible insight and wisdom way beyond his years. Then there is Jimmy, RRC’s lead pastor. I don’t know if I have ever met anyone so like me, but so opposite of me too. I know it makes no sense - just ask Teresa, Travis or our spouses. They’ll agree. Jimmy is an awesome leader and has a huge heart for our community. He speaks to my life more then he will ever know.

I love the people of Rocky River Church! Thanks for a great year.

Lessons from my Son

I love being a dad. I have learned something from Michael Dean that I don’t think I would have ever learned if I weren't a dad. A while back I was reading on a friend's blog or posting on Facebook about playing with your children. It mentioned that when you are playing with your kids - turn off your phone, computer, and/or any other devices that can be a distraction. Give yourself completely to your child.

Well that's what I did. I bought MD a water sprayer for his birthday and one hot evening after work we hooked it up. He stood and watched it for a while, but didn't want to play in the water. So, I took off my phone, shirt and shoes and emptied my pockets and just started running through the water. I was acting foolish and having fun - which made MD want to join in. We were sucking in the water and spitting it out, running though the water and just having a great time. I didn't worry about work, emails or phone calls. All of my attention was on my boy. What a great time both of us had.

Later that evening as I was thinking about the day and the fun I had with MD, I felt we had really bonded. Then I had a thought - what would it be like if I had that undivided attention when doing my devotions? How much better would my walk with God be? What if I had that undivided attention in church? How much better would my service be? What if I had that undivided attention to my wife? How much better of a husband I would be?

OK, here's the scoop. I've basically had the same hairstyle since the 6th grade - short, clean-cut and parted to the side. Well, since I'm loosing more hair than keeping it nowadays I decided to buy some clippers last Spring to save money and it's worked pretty well! Until this past Monday, when I chose the wrong size to trim my hair with. Man, is it short! So this has got me thinking about getting a “Man Wig” for a different look. What do you think? Just such a time as this

It’s been a while since I’ve “blog”-ged. I really enjoy blogging because it allows me to expose my thoughts for everyone to see, but mostly because it allows me to speak my mind.
Over the past month or so I’ve been reading the book of Esther, along with “Great Lives from God’s Word - Esther, A Woman of Strength & Dignity” by Charles R. Swindoll. I can already hear you guys saying - it is a woman’s book! Let me tell you, Esther is only 10 chapters long, but the way God places Esther as Queen and then uses her to save her people is amazing to me. There are some awesome characteristics of Esther that I need to have in my own life.

At this time in the book of Esther, one of the officials in the King’s court, Haman, has it out for the Jews. He doesn’t know that Esther is a Jew. Esther has won the heart of King Ahasuerus yet Haman comes before the king wanting to kill all the Jews. This is the moment I want to speak about. This is what challenges me.

The protocol is not for the Queen to go before the King without being invited. Mordecai, Esther’s uncle, who raised Esther (because her parents died when she was young) is an advisor to her so he gives her these words,

"Don't think that just because you live in the king's house you're the one Jew who will get out of this alive. If you persist in staying silent at a time like this, help and deliverance will arrive for the Jews from someplace else; but you and your family will be wiped out. Who knows? Maybe you were made queen for just such a time as this." Esther 4:13, 14 (The Message)

Here is my challenge. Here is what speaks to me loud and clear, the last statement made by Mordecai - “Maybe you were made queen for just such a time as this.” He’s basically saying, “Esther - maybe this is why God put you where you are. Maybe this is why the King has found you more beautiful than any other woman in all the land. Maybe this is why you are the Queen - to save the lives of the Jews.”

Man, what a different perspective this brings. These events didn’t happen by accident. I didn’t stumble upon the position I am in right now. I may not know it, but maybe, just maybe, God has me here for a greater purpose. I think through the times, events and locations of my life and even though I didn’t recognize those moments, hindsight is always 20/20. I can see how God worked, shaped and moved in me and directed my path.

If you are struggling with your situation, job, position, or season of life you’re in: let me encourage you. Find out why you are where you are. Find your reason and your purpose. It may be tough right now but understand, God promises, “…I'll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20 (The Message)

Who Am I?

I believe a lot of people, like me, struggle with this question. Sometimes I struggle with who I am and cannot get this doubt out of my mind. I wonder if I really matter. I want to be significant. I want to matter. I want to feel valued. I want to feel purpose and direction for my life. My life is filled with an awesome wife, family, friends and an awesome church - but sometimes I just don’t know Who I Am! Am I the only one who feels like this? Of course not! I believe there are seasons we all go through in our lives where we struggle like this. It is just a season of my life right now.

When I encounter seasons like this, I have to work extra-hard to meditate on God’s word. I have to figure out what God says about me? How does God view me? How does God feel about me? So I dig into the Bible. I chew on the following verses, in mind over and over throughout the day:

Isaiah 44:2 (CEV) “I am your Creator. You were in my care even before you were born.”

Psalm 139:15 (MSG) “You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something.”

Psalm 139:16 (Contemporary English Version) “But with your own eyes you saw my body being formed. Even before I was born, you had written in your book everything I would do.”

Ephesians 1:4 (MSG) “Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love.”

James 1:18 (NCV) “God decided to give us life through the word of truth so we might be the most important of all the things he made.”

Isaiah 46:3-4 (NCV) “…I have carried you since you were born; I have taken care of you from your birth. Even when you are old, I will be the same. Even when your hair has turned gray, I will take care of you. I made you and will take care of you. I will carry you and save you.”

New Years Resolution Follow-Up

Back in January I decided I wanted to lose 20lbs by the end of April - then reward myself by shaving off my beard. Well, I reached AND beat that goal! The picture to the left is me at 238lbs on Thanksgiving Day 2008. Well, I reached my goal by the end of March, not April! On January 1st I weighed 238lbs and today I weigh 217lbs! That's 21lbs - gone. I am really stoked about this!

It's not been easy- I've had to cut back on the Cokes, Cherry Lemon Sundrops and Sweet Teas I drink. I've also had to watch what I eat (just from my plate to my mouth), especially candy - see, I love Reese’s Peanut Butter cups and I also love second helpings as well as desserts. I didn't completely cut these out - I just cut these back, way back.

Finally, I've been getting up at 5am on weekday mornings and heading to the Y to work out for 30 – 45 minutes. This has probably been the hardest thing for me to do. I'm working hard, really hard to make this a habit.

The bottom line is I feel better. I feel great, I sleep better (hopefully I can eventually stop using my CPAP machine) and I had handle stress a little better. I'm actually looking forward to my physical with Dr. Ha in July. I'm excited to see what my cholesterol will be. Last summer it was 290 and I had a fatty liver. See, it was really hurting my liver’s feelings when my kidney and spleen kept calling him "fatty, fatty 2x4 - can’t fit through the bathroom door!" So, I'm looking forward to my physical results and seeing the improvements I've made.

Now I want to be down to 210lbs by the end of July and I want to run a 5K on Thanksgiving Day with Tiffani and Travis. I think I can do it! Oh, and here's the latest picture of me and my boy - taken this past weekend. Do you see a difference?

A Bad Grooming Job!

OK, so here's the scoop - Courtney’s company has been cutting jobs, laying people off and cutting pay. Over the past few weeks Courtney has had her pay cut by 20%. So in an effort for us to save money we tried this evening to groom Mila, our 5 year Shih-Tzu dog, ourselves. This is what Mila normally looks like:

4 Down, 8 to Go!

I thought I was doing pretty well this year with my book reading until I found out Jimmy Britt, my pastor, reads a book every week! Holy smokes! I like reading, but not that much. Too many good shows on TV! Actually, it is because I am a slow reader. I have to even type this slowly because I can’t type and keep up with reading at the same time.

The fourth book I’ve read this year is, “It: How Churches and Leaders Can Get It and Keep It” by Craig Groeschel. Craig is the lead pastor at Lifechurch.tv, He started the church in a garage and it is now a multi-site church. I was first turned on to Groeschel when I attended the Leadership Summit this past September. I had never heard of him before, so I was curious as to what he had to say and after hearing him speak I went and bought his book.

The book talks about many churches, churches that have “IT” and that don’t have “IT.” The churches that have IT, how did they get IT? And the churches that lost IT, how did they lose IT? There was a lot I took from this book. It challenged, encouraged, pushed and refreshed me. I felt the book was a candid conversation with one incredible leader who wants churches across America to get IT.

I tell you - there are so many factors to having “IT”: staff relationships, creative thinking and being able to fail but still move on. When you boil IT down to the simple truth: IT is about loving God and loving people. Too many churches, pastors and staff only have half of IT right. They try all the surfacy stuff; they try the “bring your friend Sundays” thing; they try free BBQ lunches. But, if you are not loving God and if you are not loving people, you can’t have IT.

What motivates me

I have been challenged lately by what motivates me to do things. What is the condition of my heart? Why do I do the things I do? For whom do I do these things?

I am challenged by this verse: “Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself…” (Philippians 2:5-11, The Message) How did Christ think of himself? “(He) made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant… (Philippians 2:7, NIV).

This is what challenges me. The problem is I tend to think more of myself then I do of others - it seems to go against my nature. Thinking like a servant is difficult. It challenges the basic problem of my life - by nature, I am selfish.There are 5 thoughts that I have to continually keep mediating on. These thoughts are:

1)Servants think more of others than themselves*: “Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4, NAS). Often, we try to get others to like to us, to be admired or to achieve our goals - this is being self-serving. Check your motives. When you serve, it won’t always be convenient or fit in your schedule.

2)Servants think like stewards, not owners*: “The one thing required of such servants is that they be faithful to their master” (1 Corinthians 4:2, TEV). The gifts, abilities and talents God has given us are not ours; God owns them. He specifically created us and gifted us for a purpose that is greater then you and greater than me. Are you using your gifts and talents for his purpose, for his kingdom?

3)Servants think about their work, not what others are doing*: “We will not compare ourselves with each other as if one of us were better and another worse. We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original” (Galatians 5:26, The Message). I know it is easy to look at other people and see what they are doing. It is easy to compare ourselves and compete with others’ ministries. But I am not responsible for what that other person is doing. I am only responsible for what I have been called to do, for what I am equipped to do. I need to simply trust God and keep serving.

4)Servants base their identity in Christ*: “Jesus knew that the Father had put him in complete charge of everything, that he came from God and was on his way back to God. So he got up from the supper table, set aside his robe, and put on an apron. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the feet of the disciples, drying them with his apron” (John 13:3, The Message). If you are going to be a servant, the first thing you must settle is your identity. For me, this is one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. Especially as I made the transition from being a leader as a real estate agent to a support role as a pastor. I was afraid, and still am, of exposing my weaknesses and short-comings. When your identity is based on your relationship with Christ, then you are free from others’ expectations.

5)Servants think of ministry as an opportunity, not an obligation*: “Serve the LORD with gladness” (Psalm 100:2, King James Version). When I was growing up, I had a pastor who always said: “We serve because we want too, not because we have too.” I like to buy my wife flowers and candy because she likes those things. But if I really want to show her I love her I cook supper for her, clean the house and do laundry. I do those things not because it is my job or that I have too, but because I love my wife and she can see that I love her by doing those things. Your service should flow out of a love you have for the Lord - not out of an obligation.

To be a servant - I need to change my thinking. To be a servant - I need to change my motives. To be a servant - I need change my actions. And to be a servant - I need to start acting like one.

Last week Courtney and I recorded “Planet Earth” on Discovery Channel. I tell you. It is amazing! I just don’t see how anyone can watch that and say we are an accident. The episode we watched was “Pole to Pole.” The weather pattern, the migration of animals and the changes of the seasons are intentionally designed to work in harmony. I wish my accidents worked like that!

I love the TV shows CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (Las Vegas), CSI: Miami and CSI: New York. CSI was the first TV show I set up a TiVo season pass for back in 2001. Well, the other night Courtney and I were watching CSI: New York, who stars Gary Sinise, one of my favorite actors. He seems to be a solid, stand-up guy, somewhat of a rarity in Hollywood. Anyway he told Danny, who was struggling with a decision to, “Not view yourself at your worst but view yourself at your best!”

Man - what a great quote, but I want to expand on it: “Don’t view yourself at your worst but view yourself the way God views you. See yourself at your best.”

What kind of confidence would that give you?

I'm happy to say I just finished finished the book “Sticky Church” by Larry Osborne. My lead pastor, Jimmy Britt got this book for me and I really enjoyed it.

This book is about small group ministries in a church. Since my primary role at Rocky River Community Church is Pastor of Connections, I made this book a priority to read.

Larry Osborne is the lead pastor at North Coast Church in Vista, California (7,000+ attend each weekend!) where he has pastored now for three decades. He believes the way to get people to connect or “stick” to church is through relationships in small groups. Besides Sunday services, small groups are North Coast Church's primary ministry. Osborne explains the process that led him and his ministry team to focus on Sermon-based small groups. As a result, the people who got involved in small groups at NCC were given an opportunity to apply what they heard the previous Sunday in the context of encouraging, accountable relationships.

I found “Sticky Church” very beneficial in helping to form and grow the small groups ministry at RRCC. Although small groups were already established before I came on staff, the church needed someone to champion these small groups. There were a lot of things going right, but there were also a lot of things that needed improvement. The biggest thing I picked up on was being intentional with what we did as a ministry in the church.

We have a lot of great small groups at Rocky River Community Church. They are the Taylors & Hills, Shropshires, Batemans, Britts, Mauldins, Bushes, GIGGLES (womens' ministry) and the worship band's small group that happens during their practices, as well.

I look forward to working with these leaders to make this a better ministry for our church. As our church grows (and it has grown a lot over the past few months!), relationships will be very important when it comes to connecting - both to people and to God.

Too Much White Noise

I remember life before cable TV. Growing up, I lived in the country, out in Mt. Pleasant. Even from there I was a good 10 minutes from town. So there was no way my family was going to get cable. My parents bowled on Fridays nights so we would go to their friends' house while they bowled - and they had cable TV! They had the box with 2 lines of buttons that made a loud clicking noise. Ah, the memories.

Anyway, before all of this high-definition stuff, my parents did have a remote control. It was called Donnie, Bobby and Dwayne! We changed the channels for our parents. On our TV there were 2 knobs - VHF and UHF. You know. You remember, right? On VHF were channels 3 and 9 which had the clearest pictures. On UHF were the new channels 18 and 36. These were always fuzzy with lots of static and white noise. So, it was hard to get a clear picture.

Well, in the past couple of weeks my life has been similar to these UHF channels. Lots of static and white noise. I've had many distractions, both personally and professionally. The white noise drowns out the important things in my life - like my bride, Courtney, and my son, MD. But, most of all it distracts me from God. If I stay distracted from Him for too long I forget my purpose and my direction and I am not the person I should be.

When the white noise gets too loud, I am forced to shut it off which is not always easy to do. I have to turn off the noise - like my phone and computer. I then go to the garage or back patio and read. In Psalm 46:10, God told David to “Be still and know that I am God!” The command to “be still” means “cause yourselves to let go.” When the white noise is too loud, I have to “be still” or “let go” to see the saving power of God in my life. I give up in trusting in what I can do or what is going on around me in order to experience the glory of God’s all-sufficiency.

When I confess the truth about who I really am and entrust all my cares, burdens and distractions to God, I regain my focus, purpose and priorities as well as an unshakable peace and confidence.

My boy, Michael Dean, put his first sentence together this week, “No Daddie.” Man- did it make my heart melt, it was so cute. I know that cuteness will not last for long so I am going to enjoy, “No Daddie” for now.

2 Down. 10 More to Go. Every Man’s Marriage

Before I began reading “Every Man’s Marriage” by Stephen Arterburn, Fred Stoeker, & Mike Yorkey, I was afraid it was going to be a man-bashing book. So I really didn't have an open mind about it. I wanted to read this book so I could be a better husband to Courtney and a better example of a husband to my boy.

I don’t have all the answers or know what to do all the time as a husband, so I muddled my way through it. Also, Courtney and I have only been married for 6 years this May, and I don’t want our marriage to grow cold. I want to learn to be a better husband. I want to make our relationship better. I want our marriage to set an example for my boy so he will know what to look for in girl and also how to have a Godly marriage. By the time I made it through the first chapter I realized this was going to be a good book.

The day we get married, we don’t set out to have a cold and empty marriage. We have dreams, passion and love for each other. As life begins to happen and that “honeymoon” period ends, distractions begin to detour married couples from each other. It's not intentional, it just happens.

“Every Man’s Marriage” is a jolt, a shot in the arm, a wake up call - whatever you want to call it - to maintain your focus on your spouse. I am a selfish person and it challenged me to put Courtney before my needs, and by doing that my needs are fulfilled. I highly encourage you to read this book. I read it about every two years or so.

I do want to give a plug along the same lines of marriage: this past Sunday, Jimmy (my lead pastor) and I went to a conference in Atlanta. On our way there we visited a church in Anderson called New Spring Church. The lead pastor, Perry Noble, was preaching part 3 of a 4-part series called “IWantANewMarriage.com.” This was the best message I had ever heard on marriage. Confessions of a Wolfpack Fan

I don’t really know why I am an NC State Wolfpack fan. No one in my family went to college there. In fact, everyone in my family pulls for UNC. There were only a few of us State fans in high school - Jennifer Lancaster, Monty Murdock and the Fishers. We were very out-numbered , but that didn't matter to me. I loved the Wolfpack and watched as many of their games as I could. I knew we would be competitive in basketball. But over the years that excitement has somewhat left me.

Jimmy V had fire and got us excited for the games. Then Les Robinson coached the team - come on, you don’t get athletic directors to coach. That’s why they are athletic directors - they can’t coach. Then after Les was Herb Sendeck. He was pretty good. He gave state a chance to beat UNC. He was a good coach but could never really advance the team further than midway in the ACC.

Now we have one of the heroes of the Cardiac Pack, Sidney Lowe, to save team. Honestly, I have zero excitement. I love State. I still pull for them. But I feel the way Tarheel fans felt with Matt Doherty. I am not one of those fans who pulls for one college team in one sport then another college team in another sport (there seems to be a lot Florida Gator football fans out there who pull for UNC basketball - I call that a band-wagon fan, folks.)

I know we beat Wake this year, but UNC is our rival and I want that game to mean something again.

Valentines Day

OK - I'm going to be honest here. I'm not a big fan of Valentines Day. I don’t understand this day and I don’t know why it is such a big deal, until yesterday. I went to get Courtney a gift after beating my brains out for the past couple days wondering what I was going to get her. Then somewhere in the process it began to click in my mind about this day. I remember feeling lonely on this day when I was single. As I was looking for a card for Courtney, I was reminded what a great wife she is to me. On days like this she goes out of her way to make me feel special and make me gifts. This day is a celebration of love between you and your spouse. It is a day to let your loved one know how much you care for them.

A lot of times I fail to let Courtney know what she means to me. She is an awesome wife and an awesome mother. I love seeing her play with my son. I love coming home to her and Michael Dean talking and playing. I love the walks we share in the evenings. I love winding down our evenings watching TV together before bed. I love it when I come home early in the morning from the YMCA and our small talks we have as she gets ready for work. I love my wife’s long red hair. I love it when she laughs at my “dorkiness.” I just flat out love my wife, Courtney Brezina Icenhour.

In January, I set a goal to read 12 books this year - basically 1 book a month. I set out to read 12 because I'm not exactly the fastest reader. I read like I spell and if you know me, you know I can’t spell! So, I thought this was an achievable goal and so far I'm on task. My first book was “Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies,” by Jim Collins and Jerry I. Poras.

“Built to Last” looks at visionary companies like Disney, Wal-Mart and Merck. These companies are at the very top of the business world and demonstrate longevity and great brand image. After reading this book, I definitely want to buy from these companies. In the book, these companies are compared to their counterparts - who are not as successful, but well-known. For example: Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures; Ford to GM; Merck to Pfizer; and GE to Westinghouse.

My favorite company is the 3M Company (Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing.) 3M really fosters a culture of creativity from their employees and allows them to spend time researching ideas. They started as a defunct mining operation and soon realized they had to do something different. With the by-products from their mining operations they developed water-proof sandpaper. This kept the company afloat until they developed Scotch Tape in 1925. The Post-it Note was invented by of one of their employees as well. How cool is that? This is why the 3M Company is one of my favorite companies.

I also found things in this book I tried to carry over into my experiences with church operation. There are some business principals the church as a whole, can learn from such as organizational structure, laser-like focus for purpose, and the possibility for new ideas and creativity.

I really liked this book and would recommend it. But, if you're just not that into business-related stuff, you mind find this book a bit boring.

Darren Libby

I just can't say enough about RRCC's latest staff addition, Darren Libby. From the moment Travis, Jimmy and I received Darren’s resume, I knew there was something awesome about this guy. I've really enjoyed, for the past few months, getting to know him as a friend and as a brother in the Lord. I love to hear him sing and lead worship and I really look forward to our Sunday morning worship times. God really does use him to prepare our hearts for Jimmy’s messages.

It's been a smooth and almost seamless transition adding him to our staff. I gotta admit, I forget how young he is because of his great insights and wisdom.

Darren, I look forward to serving with you for many years to come.

Randy Mauldin

I have known Randy’s wife, Greta, since high school. So, getting to know Randy over the past few months has been awesome. Since joining our staff at RRCC he has made a big impact on our church's ministries through pastoral care. He has a tremendous gift of mercy. He fills a void that has been empty in our church for quite some time.

It was so encouraging having Randy at the hospital, praying and hearing his comforting words of encouragement, the day we had to put tubes in my boy’s ears back in December.

In spite of the fact that he is a Tarheel fan, he is a great guy with a huge heart for people and for God. Thank you, Randy.

Tiffani Cochran

OK, so last week I wrote about Jimmy and Travis. Now I want to write about one of the most under-estimated and under-valued people on our staff at Rocky River Community Church. Tiffani Cochran. She is the assistant to Jimmy, our church’s lead pastor. She's also his personal trainer and I sometimes tap into her for fitness advice as well.

She kinda feels like a sister to me. Someone I can bounce ideas off of and know she'll be honest with me (sometimes a little too honest!) You won't see her giving announcements, leading worship or preaching a sermon - but ALL the stuff she does is so valuable. With her many talents she frees up time for Jimmy so he can spend more time on his messages, with the church's staff, with his family and with the members of RRCC.

Travis Bush

In my last post I talked about Jimmy, the pastor of our church. In this post I'm talking about Travis Bush, our Student & Families Pastor. I'm a firm believer in letting people know how much I care for and appreciate them. I think too many times we just don’t do it or we wait until it is too late.

Well, I've had the opportunity to work with Travis for several months now and I am always amazed with his wisdom. God speaks through him during our staff meetings where he shows wisdom way beyond his years. It's awesome to hear his vision, not just for the youth but also for their whole family. I went to college to study youth ministries and have been at a lot of great churches with great youth programs. And I gotta say, Travis does it right. He really is a top-shelf Student & Families Pastor at Rocky River Community Church.

Now, this may seem like I'm brown-nosing my boss. But I'm really not! It is a real honor to work at Rocky River Community Church and the people with whom I work. For many years now, I've been involved in ministries at several churches and worked at many businesses where I've had some pretty great bosses and co-workers. But, I gotta say - Jimmy Britt is one of the best.

He takes himself seriously enough to fulfill God’s calling in his life and for the town of Harrisburg, but not too seriously where he can't laugh at himself (and at me too!) I sit in staff meetings and listen to his vision for our church. I hear his compassion for hurting people and his desire for our church to be a light in the Harrisburg community. I enjoy hearing his sermons as well as all the conversations we have that challenge me to grow in my faith. He also has an awesome wife, who truly is his better half (and who takes great care of my boy in the nursery) and 2 great kids - Annie and James.

OK, enough of the brown-nosing. It really is awesome for my family and me to be a part of one of the greatest churches around.

Mila & Me

Mila, our fluffy little red & white Shih-Tzu, is my wife’s dog. After we got married she harassed me about getting a little, inside dog and I wanted nothing but an outside dog. The only kind of dog I had growing up was an outside dog. That's all I knew. Plus, at the time, we lived in a small home - only 800 sq. ft. So we really had no space for a dog.

Well, the next year we moved into our townhome and she now definitely wouldn't let up on getting a dog. So I decided to give in and get her one for her 27th birthday. We did a lot of research. We didn't want to be one of those people who buys a dog because they're "popular" only to later abandon them. We wanted to make sure the dog would fit in with our lifestyle. So, with all of our research we decided a Shih-Tzu was our best doggy match. (I know. It's funny to say. Jimmy Britt still giggles every time he says it.) I tell you, though, I really love this dog.

Lately, I've had several sleepless nights and will get up to read or just do something - and Mila gets right up along with me. She is the first one to greet me when I come home. There is nothing that makes me feel better than walking up the driveway and seeing my boy in 1 window and my dog in the other. She'll jump at my leg until I pet her. When I sit to watch TV, she jumps on the recliner with me. When I was working from home she was always at my feet. She sits and looks out the window all day until Courtney and/or I come home. She doesn't have a care in world other than Courtney, Michael Dean and me. She is truly a pleasure to have and is an important part of our family. It doesn't matter how bad a day I've had, she will always be my dog and will always love me. In fact, a lot like God loves me. Now, I'm not comparing my dog to God - well, maybe the characteristics. But she kinda is a reflection of God’s unconditional love for me.

So, yes - that's right. I call Mila "my" dog and not Courtney’s dog. Don’t tell her, though!

I am Excited!

I am so excited about being part of a great church like Rocky River Community Church. There are a lot of great things happening. We have an awesome pastor, Jimmy, who has a heart and vision for the community. We have a tremendous youth pastor, Travis, who has done a lot with very little. Then there is Randy - man he is turning our weaknesses into strengths with pastoral care. And next week we will be welcoming Darren as our new worship pastor, who has a great heart for God. Last but not least - there is you - connecting you to God and connecting you to others is what it is all about!

I can not believe it, today I am 37 years old. It seems just like yesterday that I was born. Man, how does time fly when you are having fun. My wonderful wife, Courtney, did this a while ago with the 31 things she was thankful for on her birthday. So I thought I would say the 37 things I am thankful for. Elijah's name

A few days ago, I learned something about Elijah that I have never noticed before. I cannot believe that I never caught it or stuck out to me. It is Elijah’s name. You see, I went to a Bible University in Florida and I had the option of taking Greek and Hebrew but choose to take things “less hard.” I minored in the New Testament so I took only the Old Testament classes that I was required to take. SO- it is not wonder that I never caught this before about Elijah’s name. “EL” in Hebrew means “God” and “JAH” means “Jehovah”. The “I” that is between the “EL” and the “JAH” means my or mine. So Elijah means, “My God is Jehovah” or “The Lord is my God.” Wow- what an awesome proclamation with a name, every time someone would say his name- Elijah, they are saying- ‘The Lord is my God.”

I wish my name were that cool- Donnie- is Irish and means “World Ruler.” I wonder what world- Middle Earth? My middle name is even less cool- Dean is Old English and means “Dweller in the Valley.” Now that is something to tell everyone- “The World Ruler dwells in the Valley.”

Christmas Day

What a great day with family. We started it off with a walk around the neighborhood, then Courtney, MD and myself opened presents. MD just does not get it yet, but he loved the tissue paper. Then we went over to the Icenhour's, had breakfast and exchange gifts. Mimi and Poppa had a house full of grandkids and they were loving it. They do everything they can to make it a great and special day for the grandkids. After that Courtney's family came over for a late lunch. We had a great time. Finally, Courtney and I got to have some time to ourselves were we go to our annual Christmas movie. We saw Marly and Me- GREAT movie. Now we are tired and ready for bed. I hope your day was as great as mine. Merry Christmas!!!

Not so bad!

Not so bad, except for me! Even Courtney was better than I was. God is faithful. He always is and always has been. MD did great. The medicine they give him to relax was so funny. It was like having a drunk baby in my arms. He laughed and giggled at everything. He even laughed at trying not to fall asleep. I needed some of that stuff.

Anyway, he is doing better. He has a little temperature, a carry over from last night before the surgery and why he was having the tubes put in in the first place. We have an awesome kid and is a gift from God. Thank you for all of your prayers.

Answered Prayers?

Is a pastor supposed to struggle with his 17th month-old son getting tubes in his ears? Man - it tears my heart up to think of my boy going under with gas to have a simple surgery. I really did not want him to have them put in. I have prayed for God to heal his ears so he wouldn't need to have it done. There are things about God that I do not understand and this is one of those things, unanswered prayers. I know this is something that a lot of kids have done all the time, but this is my kid, my boy that I specifically prayed for. There is a lot more things I want to say, but I am lost for words. I do know this verse, and this verse comforts my soul and I need to repeat it over and over in my thoughts. I am trying to meditate on it:

Philippians 4:6,7 - "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

God - I pray that you will be with my son tomorrow and keep him safe. Take away the anxiety Courtney and I have and let your peace rest in our hearts and that there will be no doubt that you are in control ~ Amen.

God is Looking for You!

God is looking for you, for someone to take a stand. Are you the one? God is looking for someone to stand in the gap, to take a stand for Him. God is looking for someone who has the courage to proclaim His Word. Will it be you? God is looking for someone to take a stand at their school, in their job and at home. If that someone isn't you, then who?

"And I sought for a man among them, that should build up the wall, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found none." Ezekiel 22:30

Gosh, I sound so preachy this morning, don't I? But, honestly, I get pretty frustrated with all the "political correctness (PC)" in our world right now. It is "Merry Christmas" and not "Happy Holidays," folks! All this PC junk has entered into our belief system as Christians and we have allowed it to effect the way we celebrate our heritage. We've forgotten how to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

Christmas is about the birth of Christ, the birth of my Savior and I am refusing to forget that. It is not just a holiday like July 4th or Memorial Day. It is about a new relationship, and the rebirth of soul - the gift of eternal life that no-one, and I mean no-one, can take away from you. Actually, it is the best re-gift that anyone can give.

Let me encourage you to not be afraid to stand up in the crowd. Go tell it on the mountain - that Jesus Christ is Lord!

The Purpose of Christmas, Week 2

Here we are - just a little over a week from Christmas. How exciting! I can’t wait for MD (my boy) to get his gifts on Christmas Morning. I know he is only 17 months old, but there is a gift I just can’t wait for him to get. I can’t tell you, because if I do, I will have to kill you. The same thing with my wife. I really enjoying buying her things, putting things in her stocking and under the tree. Sometimes, I can’t wait 'til Christmas to give her the gifts. There are times I can’t wait 'til Christmas for her to open her presents - almost to the point that I want to give it to her when I get it.

I wonder if this is what it was like for God when He gave His Son for us. I bet God gets excited and the angels rejoice when we receive the gift God has given us. It is easy for us to remember that Christmas is a time for Celebration. But Christmas is also a time for Salvation!

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

I love this time of the year - the time from Thanksgiving to Jan. 1. And for many reasons. Thanksgiving, Christmas plays, Christmas parties, my parents' anniversary (40th this year!), Christmas Eve, Christmas Eve service, Christmas day, Courtney's and my annual Christmas night movie (7 years and counting!), family meals, sweets, my birthday (31st), sweets and the end of one year and the beginning of another. Oh, did I mention sweets?!

This time of the year reminds me to look back on the year and look forward to the new year. In all the hustle and bustle I just try and enjoy the moments.

How do I handle people who I feel are wrong and will not admit it? How do I handle those I struggle with? What do I do, when I am frustrated and there is nothing else to say or feel?

There are times that I really struggle with these feeling and I tend to push these people away or just ignore them. It's easier for me to just emotionally shut down. I justify this by feeling, “It is what it is” and I just leave it be. But...a good friend showed me this verse:

"Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone." 1 Thessalonians 5:14 (New Living Translation)

Awe now, come on! Don’t show me this stuff. That "be patient with everyone", is really the kicker for me. It is a lot easier to just ignore the person and move on. I am fine the way I am and this is just the way I deal. (It's OK. Keep reading!)

Then I am reminded of a quote from C.S. Lewis:
"This year, or this month, or, more likely, this very day, we have failed to practice ourselves the kind of behavior we expect from other people" (The Case for Christianity).

Ouch! How many times have I been “that person” who doesn’t admit that I'm wrong, who causes frustration, who is lazy and doesn't see the importance of getting things done? How many times has someone been patient with me, encouraged me, stroked my ego, and lifted me up? How many times have I seen it in other people, but never in myself?

This is how Christ views me. Should I not, then, be more patient, more forgiving, more willing to lift up, more willing to comfort, more willing to forgive and more willing to overlook others faults?

Man - I tell ya, if I want it from other people, I'd better discipline myself to practice that kind of behavior in my own my life.

12 Days of Christmas

OK - I tried to be a little creative and write my own version of the song, "12 Days of Christmas". I thought it would be fun, but it really wasn't! It was hard. So instead I decided to do a search about the history of the song. As I did some digging around, the story about the "12 Days of Christmas" is really not that fun either. Now, on a more funny note I have found a song that we all probably you could relate to. “The 12 Things I Hate About Christmas”. While listening to this song I was shaking my head in agreement because it is easy to make Christmas about these 12 things, instead of the true purpose of Christmas: Jesus!

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Last night, after Courtney and I put MD to bed, we turned the TV on and found Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer showing. I cannot tell you the last time I watched that cartoon. That show brought back so many good memories from my childhood at Christmas. This is my favorite time of year and Rudolph brought a smile to my face.

I am still amazed at how they that made that show (I can’t figure if it's a show, cartoon or mini-movie.) Anyway, they didn't have computers back in 1964, so the details in that movie impress me so much. But there are some things I just can’t figure out about the show and the song: How did Robert May come up with a story about a reindeer with a red, glow-in-the-dark nose? Why was the little doll on Misfit Island there, what was wrong with her? How does the know-it-all Yukon Cornelius get those little dogs to pull his fat butt around on that dog sled? And how do you make a 3 minute song into a 1 hour movie?

Some other concerns I have about Rudolph: Before Hermey, the dentist elf, how did the elves take care of their teeth? How is a reindeer born with a red, glow-in-the-dark nose - a result of global warming or toxic waste? How does Santa Claus start the show really thin, then suddenly get really fat? What happened to Bumble after putting the star on the tree - was he suddenly nice and didn't want to eat the elves and reindeer anymore?

Man - I just made myself not like the movie, I mean cartoon, anymore. Actually, I am going to forget about all those questions and just enjoy the song from Gene Autry:

"Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him, you would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say:

Tis the Season

What a great time of year! I just love this time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I get excited about giving (and receiving) gifts. I also, now, get excited about seeing my boy have fun around the Christmas tree, getting him presents and having his picture made with Santa. I love to buy my wife gifts and treat her special during this time of year because she really puts a lot of time (she doesn't have) into decorating our house. I am also excited because at our church, Rocky River Community, we are doing a 3-week study on Rick Warrens, the “Purpose of Christmas. ” Our Pastor (Jimmy) will also be preaching along with this study.

The first part of the series is “The Purpose of Christmas is a Time of Celebration.” I know, when you hear this I'm sure you're thinking "Yeah, now that is what I am talking about! Lets celebrate!" (And no, not the Kool and the Gang song.) I am talking about an attitude in life. Living your life with an attitude of celebration.

There are many definitions of celebration. My favorite is, “to praise widely or to present to widespread and favorable public notice." (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/celebrate)

I want to encourage you to:
- CELEBRATE the LOVE God has for you.
- CELEBRATE that God is WITH you.
- CELEBRATE that God is FOR you.

A Different Direction

Hey guys - man how this has changed since the last time I wrote on here! The country has elected a new president, the housing market is declining, it is Fall and I am working as a part-time pastor at Rocky River Community Church.

I have gone back to what I studied in college. I never thought I would go back to doing full-time, I mean part-time ministry, again since I left the ministry back in 1999. But I guess God has a way of bring things back full circle, huh! I really don’t think I was running from God, I just figured I wouldn't get back into full-time ministry.

However, I was reminded of my calling when a good friend from high school, Scott Moyer, mentioned in an email the calling I had in high school. Right now, this position with RRCC is only part-time, but my prayer is for it to turn into a full-time position.

Either way - I am excited about pursuing my true calling again.

Just a quick note: I've added my own comments to each point. There are a lot of great real estate agents out there and there are just as many bad agents. When dealing with a real estate agent, I feel it is best to keep in mind the following questions:

Does your agent never get in touch or fail to offer advice? These are some of the red flags that tell you to ditch this agent and run to find a new one.

While a savvy real-estate agent can certainly help you sell your home more efficiently, not all brokers are created equal. And in today's feeble real-estate market, it's all the more important that an agent go the extra mile on behalf of home sellers.

But how can a homeowner tell if an agent is doing everything he or she can to get the property sold or is simply going through the motions? To answer that question, U.S. News recently spoke with a handful of industry professionals and compiled are two distinct signs that may indicate that an agent is not 100% committed to the effort.

1. Is your Agent Out of Touch? Just as in a marriage, communication is a key component of the relationship between a homeowner and an agent. If the communication isn't there, the relationship won't work. So if your agent doesn't return your phone calls in a timely fashion or disappears without warning for weeks at a time, you should probably find someone else. Some real-estate agents will block out a single window of time — say, between 4 and 5 p.m. — in which to return all of their phone calls for that day, says Jay Thompson of Thompson's Realty in Arizona. "I've never really understood that," he says. "That's not necessarily good if your seller or buyer wants to talk to you at 8 o'clock in the morning — they end up waiting a whole day."

Donnie's notes: I'm on the fence with this one. I am up front with my clients as to the best time and medium to reach me. Because of family time in the mornings and evenings, I am generally unavailable before 9 am and after 7 pm. If someone calls me before 9 am or after 7 pm, I return their calls before 10 am, respecitvely. I don’t set aside a certain time to return calls. I simply answer my calls and emails throughout the day unless I am with a client, because they deserve my attention at that time.

2. Does your Agent Give you Advice? Let's face it; even homeowners who have been through several real-estate transactions can benefit from a little advice from their agent. But if an agent doesn't offer any advice, it could be an indication that he or she is not fully engaged in the process. "We're not shy people," says Elizabeth Blakeslee of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Washington, D.C. "If an agent doesn't suggest fixing drippy faucets or reducing clutter — that sort of thing — then they are just going to put [the property] in the Multiple Listing [Service] and throw up a sign and hope." Not exactly the pathway to value in today's sluggish market.

Donnie's notes: I feel it is my duty as a real estate agent to offer my professional opinions and advice. From my years of experience I've gained a lot of knowledge about real estate. I hear what buyers say about homes and I understand their desires. It is my job to gather information then give my advice - simply to make sure my clients get the best price for their home.

Maximizing First Impressions: Part 2

In my last post I stressed the importance of the outside of your home making a good first impression on potential buyers. In Part 2 of Maximizing First Impressions, I'll be focusing on the inside of your home.

Once inside, experts say most buyers are reaffirming their curbside decision. As well as the outside may look, the buyers want to see an appealing interior too. Simply consider the following things for the interior of your home.

Clean, Clear, Light and Bright
· Give every room in the house a thorough cleaning and remove all clutter. Hiring a cleaning
service may pay for itself by adding to a buyer’s perceived value of your home.
· For a sleeker, more spacious look, consider placing furniture from crowded rooms in
storage.
· Clear kitchen counters of everything other than perhaps a few attractive items. Ask yourself:
In a model home, would a professional decorator put your choice of items out on the
counter?
· Remember, closets will be opened! Keep closets, cupboards, and even your attic orderly
and neat. Since you're anticipating a move anyway, consider holding a garage sale or
boxing and storing unused belongings.
· If necessary, repaint or clean/replace dingy, soiled or strongly colored walls, and window
and floor coverings with a light, neutral shade. Bright rooms look bigger, and neutral colors
help buyers envision their own furnishings and décor.
· Repair dripping faucets, burned out light bulbs, or cracked window panes.
· Repair cracks, holes or damage to plaster, wallboard, wallpaper, and tiles.

Warm and Homey
· Subtle scents of potpourri in bedrooms or baths and fresh baked cookies or cinnamon in
the kitchen can make your home more inviting.
· Keep an attractive set of towels in each bathroom to be brought out only for showings.

By follow these simple rules you should expect to sell your home quickly AND get top dollar for your home.

Maximizing First Impressions: Part 1

There are many important things to consider when selling your home. Just read below.

As a Real Estate Professional, I believe the most important thing is having your home ready to show. Most buyers will know if they like your home in the first 30 seconds. Really. 30 Seconds is barely enough time to get from the car to the front door. So, first impressions are absolutely important! Sellers need to have their home looking good from the front curb to the back yard. A buyer's first impression may very well be their last impression. I can't tell you how many times I've pulled into a home's driveway, with potential buyers, only to back up and move on to the next house.

Consider the list below when planning to put your house on the market. Doing these things in advance will help with those quick home showings appointments that give you little time to prepare. I encourage my clients to make sure their home is ready to show every time they leave. And here’s how:

General Exterior
· Prospective buyers will react well if your home has been well-maintained
· Manicure landscaping - mow; edge and water lawn; trim hedges; weed and fertilize
flowerbeds; and prune trees
· Keep driveway clean and free of parked cars, and keep the garage door closed
· Repair or replace loose or damaged roof shingles
· Minimize cracks or crumbling on walkways, walls, or steps, and keep them clean and free of obstructions, like toys or snow.
· Items, from RV’s to waste cans, left out can contribute to a cluttered or busy appearance
· Make sure that from the street, your property appears clear
· Inspect appearance of interior window coverings from the curb
· Repair any peeling paint or loose caulking on windows or other areas
· Take steps to eliminate insect or rodent pests
· Pick up after your pets and neighborhood animals

Front Doorway
· While agents work the lockbox for a key, buyers have idle time to notice details
· Apply a fresh coat of paint to the front door
· Consider adding pots of flowering plants in the entryway, if weather permits
· Eliminate cobwebs and groom doorway area windows, porch light, or decorative glass

Charlotte

Hi there. I'm singing my same song again about the Charlotte Metro Area. While other Metro Cities are showing a 10 digit decrease in property value, the Charlotte Metro Area still maintains a steady or some would say a “flat market.” Charlotte’s property values only decreased by less than 1% while places like Miami has a 26.7% decrease and Las Vegas had a 26.8% decrease.

We are at the bottom of the market and now is absolutely the best time to buy. I believe the market we have now will be the market we will have for the next couple months or even until the end of the year. When the housing market starts to grow it will be a gradual increase instead of a sudden down and up, like a “V.” A slow “up” would be better for us long term. I say this because our country has never experienced a down housing market, stock market and soaring gas prices - all at the same time.

The “FEDS” made a great decision last week in not decreasing rates but keeping them unchanged. This will help curve the rate of inflation over the next few months.

So with all this said, this is why I feel now is the best time to buy: interest rates are not going to go down and our home values are flat-lining. Buy, buy, buy!

What is a Comparative Market Analysis?

A Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) uses the most current and reliable information from the Multiple Listing Service (MLS), real estate firms, and title companies in your community. The homes that are included in an analysis are a sampling of properties in the area that are currently for sale or that have recently sold. This information provides us a base line from which to begin our comparison.

At times, the term "fair market value" causes confusion. The definition has three basic parts – particular house – current condition – time frame. Simply, fair market value is the price at which a home will sell within a reasonable amount of time. A CMA allows us to figure, using the above information, the fair market value for your home. CMAs are just an estimation and the price could vary up or down depending on the motivation of the buyer, seller and any fluctuations in the market. The following are factors I look for to help determine the value of your home in the current market. The home itself is only a part of the puzzle.

Location Where your home is located may be the single most important factor when determining the value of your home.

Condition The condition of your home affects the price and how quickly it will sell. The appearance, both inside and out, can affect the buyer’s perception. Since emotion plays a large part in buying a home the buyer’s first impression is important!

Price Establishing the correct price for a home will help insure a quick sale. A CMA will help you decide the best price for your home.

Competition Buyers will evaluate your home against others they deem comparable. Properties currently for sale and properties that have recently sold will have the greatest impact on the market value of your home.

What do Home Buyers Want in North Carolina?

1. Central Air Conditioning is a must for the long, hot, humid days of North Carolina. We have pretty mild temperatures in the winter, but in the summer the heat and the humidity can make for long and sticky days.
2. A 2-Car Garage is more desirable than a 1-car garage and a 1-car garage is more desirable than no garage. If you are like me, the garage becomes a storage area, anyway, for things you think you will use, but never do.
3. Walk-in Closets you can't get enough of. I believe it is more fashionable and desirable to have “His” and “Her” closests in the master bedroom. Spacious closets are desirable for the secondary bedrooms. If you run out of closet space you could always use the garage, right?
4. Backyard/Play Area for the family. As families grow they look at communities and the features they offer such as a pool, playgrounds, walking trails and tennis courts. More people are looking for features in communities they do not have to keep up themselves.
5. Cable/Satellite TV-ready Homes. Oh yes, no argument here. More and more people are looking for special features, such home networking, theater rooms and fiber optic-quality images. With the rising cost of movie tickets, many choose to stay home and watch American Idol!
6. High-Speed Internet Access. Can we say goodbye dial-up and hello cable/dsl? Can you imagine a world without high-speed internet? Well, actually, I can. I remember paying for AOL by the minute, by the way.
7. Seperate Toilet Closet. Have you every woke up in the morning and needed to use the bathroom, but your wife was in there blow-drying her hair and you where too lazy to go use another bath because you wanted your personal throne? Enough said.
8. Patio for Outdoor Entertaining. I desire to be a BBQ master and show off for my friends, but for now I have to settle for my 10 x 10 cement pad.
9. Fencing. Many people think that fences are good so the dog and kids can run around wild all day outside. I have to agree with Robert Frost, “Good fences make for good neighbors.”
10. Homes Less than 10 Years Old. Part of me agrees with this and part of me does not. Brand-spanking new homes tend to appreciate faster in value, but after a while they begin to all look the same. Old homes might need to be updated but have character and you can upfit them to your personal taste.

My view of the Housing Market

So many things to talk about: movies, Nascar, politics, gas prices, the weather and other things. What is on my mind today are home prices and the Charlotte Market (Charlotte Metro Area- Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Union, Iredell, Gaston and York Counties). I am a news junkie- it drives my wife crazy with all the news I listen too. I feel so disconnected from the world if I have not heard the news for the day. I spend a lot of time listening to Fox News Channel in the morning as I work out, 1110 WBT AM in the mornings and Fox Talk radio on Sirius. As I write this I am listening to Britt Hume on the Fox News Channel. This is probably more information you desire to know, but I want to use this to make a point.

There is a lot of information out there about our housing market in Charlotte; however the places you go to get your information seems to be giving us 2 different stories. Our local media reports about our high foreclosure rates and the housing slump. I get so frustrated with Al Gardner and the Charlotte Morning New on 1110 WBT AM. The interviews he has seemed to always be negative towards the housing market. It is true the housing market nationally is slumping pretty badly in cities like Philadelphia, Las Vegas and Miami. Many reports say this is one of the worst in 35 years. BUT, there is a great positive side to our market here in Charlotte that is rarely reported on from our local media.

According to RealtyTimes.com, Charlotte home prices have risen by 2.1%. Also according to Smartmoney.com, Charlotte continues to buck the national trend of declining home prices while other markets are declining by 2% - 5%. I wish we could hear more of this from our local media.

There are many factors as to why the housing market stays steady in Charlotte: 1) the mild climate, 2) the diversity of jobs and the continued growth of jobs in Charlotte, 3) North Carolina is the sixth fastest growing state and one of the greatest reasons, 4) According to Forbes Online, Charlotte is one of the cheapest places in the United States to buy a home. Where is this information reported in our local market?

I believe nationally we have hit bottom and it is all up from here. As you can tell, I am a positive thinker or at least I try to be. Now is absolutely the best time buy a home: prices are good, there is a lot to choose from and interest rates are great.

“Why did I get into real estate?”

Someone ask once asked me: “Why did you get into real estate?” I had to take a moment to think about my response. I used to be a youth pastor in Youngstown Ohio and there where many great things about that job. I got to be a part of significant moment of people lives, such as: births, graduations, marriages and even death of a loved one. I enjoy people, I like hearing their stories and helping them. I like being a part of people lives during significant moments. Being a real estate agent allows me to continue being in people’s lives during one of the one of most important decisions they will ever make, buying or selling a home.

I very much enjoy what I do, but I do not take my role as a real estate agent lightly. There are people in business who have the same passion as I do, but on the other hand there are some who do not. I view my role as a Real Estate Professional as a servant/relationship job. While understanding their needs, I serve at the pleasure of my clients. If I do not give my clients great service they can fire me at anytime, so I work hard for them. It is also my desire to build a relationship with my clients that last way beyond the closing of their property. I know the best advertising I can have is word of mouth from my clients.
